I’m referring to the Green flavor variety, not the Tech giant, of course. I don’t know why or precisely when Green Apple declared war on Lime flavored candies, but it’s still being fought today and Lime is losing.

Candy was on my 2013 New Year’s Resolution no-no list, so when I bought my first bag of Skittles of 2013 the other day, I was shocked to discover that my favorite Skittles flavor had been replaced by Green Apple!

Sadly, Lime’s longtime companion, Lemon, chose to remain silent as poor Lime continued to fall victim to the ruthless corporate executives and their alleged “Public Opinion Polls”.

Can Lemon even survive without Lime? Can you picture Batman without Robin or Bert without Ernie? I certainly can’t.

In my outrage, I began to think about the other famous battles that Lime has lost over the years. As a kid, some of my favorite candies were Lime flavored: Starbursts,  Lik-M-Aid, Pixy Stix and Life Savers.

Starburst

When Mars first introduced Starbursts (under the name “Opal Fruits”) in the UK in 1959, the original flavors were Strawberry, Lemon, Lime and Orange. Sometime in the late 70s or early 80s, Starburst replaced Lime with Cherry. Lime made a brief comeback in 2007 as part of a limited edition “Retro” as part of the “Baja” variety flavor pack.

I do love Cherry Starbursts though, so I can almost consider this one a draw.

Lik-M-Aid/Pixy Stix

When Lik-M-Aid was first introduced by Fruzola  in 1952, neither Lime nor the Lik-a-Stix we all know and love were included. Since jasonliebig over at Collecting Candy already wrote a wonderful in-depth article on the history of Lik-M-Aid, I won’t go into a lot of detail. I do highly recommend reading his article though.

I seem to remember Lime being phased out of both Pixy Stix and Lik-M-Aid in the late 80s or early 90s. The last package of Lik-M-Aid containing Lime that I can find is dated 1986 and I can’t even find a vintage picture of Lime Pixy Stix.

Lime was briefly replaced with Blue Raspberry which actually tasted pretty yummy. Pixy Stix also replaced it’s Lime with  a Blue Raspberry/Berry Punch and they have not added the dreaded Green Apple to their line up (yet.)

Shortly after that, Blue Raspberry was also nixed and we were given the Frankenstein monster we have today: Blue Raspberry that morphs into, you guessed it, GREEN APPLE!

Life Savers

For 68 years, from 1935 to 2003, the 5 original fruit-flavored Life-Savers were: Pineapple, Lemon, Lime, Cherry and Orange.

In 2003, Lime was replaced with…Watermelon! I betcha thought I was gonna say Green Apple!

This time it was not alone, though. Lemon finally got what was coming to it, too, along with Orange.

The new Five-Flavor pack now consists of: Pineapple, Cherry, Raspberry, Blackberry & Watermelon.

So, where do you fall? Are you a Lime Lover or Green Apple Apologist? Leave me a comment and let me know!

I’d also like to know if you remember any other retro candies that once contained Lime.
